Barcelona, 3rd March 2025 – Vicinity has announced a strategic collaboration with the University of Surrey to accelerate the development of 5G and beyond communications systems by integrating NL-COMM, an innovative non-linear MIMO signal processing technology. This partnership strengthens Vicinity’s roadmap for next-generation wireless solutions, expanding its portfolio to include high-performance 5G base stations and terminals enhanced with advanced MIMO decoding algorithms that boost data throughput, reduce costs, and optimize power efficiency.
Developed under the leadership of Prof. Konstantinos Nikitopoulos and supported by the UK’s Department of Science and Technology (DSIT) and Innovate UK, NL-COMM is a breakthrough signal processing framework designed to address long-standing challenges in wireless communications. It delivers substantial improvements in spectral efficiency, connectivity, and energy efficiency by enabling systems to transmit multiple information streams simultaneously at the same frequency, such as in MIMO (Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) and NOMA (Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access) systems.
Dr. Eric Tsang, CEO of Vicinity, stated, “This collaboration with the University of Surrey places Vicinity at the forefront of 5G and beyond technologies. By integrating NL-COMM’s advanced technology, we can offer cost-competitive, high-performance base station and terminal products that meet the growing demands of the wireless market.”
Prof. Konstantinos Nikitopoulos added, “Partnering with Vicinity represents a big step in delivering the gains of NL-COMM in a commercial environment, and showcasing how non-linear processing can transform wireless technology, and can enable unmatched performance, scalability, and efficiency in 5G and beyond networks.”
Focused on developing next-generation products of 5G base stations and terminals in 5G, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), and beyond-5G networks, the collaboration positions Vicinity as a leader in the evolution of wireless connectivity. Attendees at MWC 2025 can experience live demonstrations of NL-COMM technology at Hall 7, Stand 7B43, and explore Vicinity’s 5G base station and terminal solutions integrated with NL-COMM at Hall 7, Stand 7A11.
